the wedding hymn calls the bride “kanyā” (virgin/maiden) being led to her husband. Virginity was assumed as the ideal condition for marriage.
>Manusmriti 9.88–90
prescribes that fathers should give their daughters in marriage as maidens (kanyā-dāna) to suitable men. The term “kanyā” itself denotes virgin status.
>Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva 146.43–44
explicitly praises the maiden given in marriage before menstruation (kanyāyā avṛtāyāḥ dānam), showing the preference for unwed, untouched girls as brides.
However their are certain conditions for widows to remarry too.
