It was created the same way you have countless dharmic orders founded by various gurus in india. Sikhism just became a political force due to khalsa and ended up becoming prominent(imagine if kabirpanth, iskcon, lingayats, dera sacha sauda, sadhguru, arya samaj were considered separate religions). Many sikhs and punjabi hindus are dual faith. Golden temple is literally called 'Hari mandir sahib'. In earliest paintings of nanak you see him with tilak. 'Ik onkar' is just another symbol of Om.

The concept of distinct religions are foreign to indic culture. Its an abrahamic concept. If we start labelling every bhakti sect, order, school or panth as a separate religion, we will have 1000s of religions in india whose followers worship each other's gods. The concept of distinct religions simply doesnt make sense in a culture where everything is worshipped and where there is no concept of heresy.
