People tend to hope a celestial figure will be a benevolent figure and powerful enough entity to act as divine intervention when they are in the state of absolute crisis, specially if the crisis has approached unprovoked. As a result they tend to personalize their sentiments and carry a lot of emotional weight and hopes as well as trauma induced strain when approaching religious figure in any communal body, temple in this case. As a result when they feel like they have done anything to finally earn the attention and thus divine intervention, the hope and weight of the expectations can make people emotional.
