I just read about a football stadium disaster caused by liverpool fans, due to which 39 people died and 100s injured.
Because of this, ALL english football teams were banned from uefa for 5 years, safety standards were improved and so many other things happened.
Meanwhile, dozens, if not hundred of indians die from stampedes, bridge collapses, etc every year but nothing happens

As you've said, this is damage control and they'll try to memoryhole this incident in a few weeks, or at worst, a month. There's lot of money, people, agencies and even the government working towards keeping the football or sports business running. It's a huge economic activity and draws in lot of tourists as well.
It's too big to fall. A silent revolution would be a better thing to do. One thing I like about Bharatchan is that very few people give fucks about cricket. It's nice and calm here. Pornavid's Inch had cricket threads whenever there was a match and it was irritating.
