32+ NEET here. The chances of you entering the IT is slim buddy. I have been talking to IT professionals for the past year and they all told that the industry is no what it used to be. I have seen freshers with great profiles with good projects and 500 to 1000 leetcode problems solved struggling to find jobs. During my search i found exactly one guy on reddit who got an entry level job at 30+ with a 9 year career gap on but that's pretty much it. You can try faking your experience(one of my friends have done this) but that is extremely risky.

It's different in academia.

I don't think anyone cares about actual research. They're doing a PhD because they have no choice but to do it. They EXPECT a PhD for a promotion. Right now, SOME shithole colleges accept just a masters degree for the position of assistant professor, but some better institutes like BITS Pilani or something will expect and will only hire a PhD at the entry level itself. The hierarchy is too narrow for promotions - assistant professor, associate professor, professor, and senior professor if I'm right. You HAVE to have a PhD and some nonsense garbage papers published in reputed journals to even move on to the next stage of associate professor.
