Fischer did it before computers, when people practiced manually, created openings and theory themselves with other people and GMs, fischer went alone against the Russian chess machine, learnt Russian to read Russian books and chess magazines, defeated great Russian GMs after whom modern openings are named, like Sicilian, Petrosian etc
He hid his special opening preparations for years until he went all out against Spassky in the WC, introducing new ideas in the Benoni ,Queen to H4, etc, stumping the preparation of Russian chess Gms like Tal etc who analysed his games for years
