when one lingers too long at the edge of the abyss, the darkness begins to learn the shape of their gaze. what first repulsed them slowly becomes familiar, then permissible, then strangely amusing. in the fevered echo chambers of anonymous crowds, the descent quickens. each voice trying to outdo the last in ugliness, as if shock itself were a kind of currency. yet the abyss does not merely receive what is cast into it. it reflects and reshapes the one who peers inside. soon the spectacle is no longer the darkness below, but the quiet erosion of the soul that watches it.
