Next time ask a simple question depending on the context, like where is the nearest railway station, how to reach x location, what is the bus timing to reach xyz town etc. do it confidently and in a calm manner, don't do it in an awkward way or you will jolt her ease. Then if she is also intrested she might ask you a question back and you can start a conversation. If nothing happens then rest in the realisation that perhaps it was never ment to be. This way you will atleast not have any regrets.

Context is really the key in such encounters.
Like for example in OP's case he could have just politely said - hi do you travel on this route frequently ?
To which she might reply - yes or no.
If she says yes, you can then ask her how is the usual traffic on that route, or if there are any other mode of transport for travelling to point b(where the op was) to point A the metrostation, since you just started a new job and this would be your everyday route or anything else,.you can lie, she doesn't known so be creative.
If she replies no you can say -ohh, ok, and give her the justification you have thought of for asking the said question.
Make the question subjective, if you ask her something like what is 2+2 she ll just say 4 and the scope of carrying the conversation forward get very limited and awkward.
Think of atleast 2 unrelated subjective question before you strike the conversation. So that Incase if one fizzles out, you still have some game left.
