In case it's tl;dr for you, the only reason Tamil is considered 'old' is because Sangam era literature also called their language 'Tamil'. That's literally it.
But Tamil is just literal translation for 'Our Language - Tai Mozhi', Sangam goys using this term to refer to their language don't mean the language they actually spoke is one mutually legible with Tamil. In fact, considering how much sanskritized Tamil used to be, Malayalees might actually understand medieval Tamils more than Tamils today.
Gulti literature is almost as old as Sangam literature.
