They cannot fathom, that they are a failure in their personal capacity. so they try to zoom out they try to think about communities and other superficial relations that's why sharma ji ka beta was such a template back then. to be close to truth yet be part of majority. They think it's their own unique way of defending their "own legacy" which they were not even part of and also why wouldn't u want free validations and why don't u want free pity if u can get both of them without doing anything but just by in relationship with a specific group why wouldn't u want that. free stuff is really great u know.atleast that's my thesis regardless of their political spectrum this is something common I've noticed
