this becomes increasingly less true as you go toward modernity. Bataille had a fucked up childhood and his parents divorced. Sartre and Camus were working/middle class. And Nietzsche wasn't rich, he was the son of a priest but his father died when he was very young. All of these people were exceptionally intelligent and were academics or subsided off of their writing alone.
