Mention that wearing the janeu will help you follow daily rituals (Sandhyavandana, Brahmacharya discipline, etc.) with sincerity.
For the cost thing, suggest them a simpler ceremony with close family instead of a grand event. Many Brahmin families perform Upanayana in a homely setting with a priest.

you can buy the strings from a store and find sum yt videos on how to make them and then just wear it without having to pay the middleman ie other bamans and people you would have to feed.
