fascinating that as a Braj guy I can easily understand most of Rajasthani and fair amount of Haryanvi but dialects of East UP completely go over my head.
can any Rajasthani tell if he understands Gujarati or not ?
can Haryanvis understand Punjabi and vice-versa ?

Hindi, punjabi, rajasthani, gujarati, pahari, haryanvi all are derived from Saursheni prakrit while eastern gangetic languages are derived from magadhi prakrit. Maybe thats why.

Because among those languages they are most distant to your mother tongue. But they too descend from Shauseni prakrit so are closer linguistically than magadhi prakrit descendants.

Probably thanks to East UP dialects originating from Maghadi Prakriti while Braj came from the Shauraseni Prakriti.

Yeah, I notice this chain where people and the dialect that is neighbour to you has some form of cohesiveness to most people.

I have heard that himachalis can understand 95% Punjabi but Punjabis can't understand even 30% Pahadi.

Same, i can understand most central/east UP dialects of Hindi and even a bit of Nepali/Bengali as a Maithili speaker but when it comes to Haryanvi or Rajasthani languages I can't.

Also contact can masquerade differences. Punjabi and gujarati are closer to hindi than bhojpuri is to hindi linguistically but because UP biharis use hindi as official and academic language, their languages start appearing closer to hindi when in reality linguistically they are closer to bengali (another magadhan prakrit descendant).

Idk how much they understand. I can understand punjabi fully and i dont even consume any punjabi media.

i have never really met someone who spoke bundeli. I can understand awadhi, most dialects of bhojpuri, and little bit of west up stuff (khariboli/braj). Isn't Bundeli spoken in MP waise?

I can understand full Kannauji because of my mother.
I can understand full braj because of my father.
Interestingly native Braj speakers can't understand full Kannauji and vice-versa.

I can understand Bundeli because I can understand Kannauji.
I can make sense of a lot more of Awadhi words in comparison to my pure Braj paternal relatives.

"some" people say that kannauji is a sub-dialect of Braj but I don't think thats true. The tone of speaking and vocubulary changes significantly.

Also true.

Also true. Hindi itself comes under a different branch entirely, far removed from the magadhi languages like maithli and maghai. However a majority of Hindi speakers will be able to even understand Bhojpuri, I don't they will be able to do so with lath mar boli and so on.
when in reality linguistically they are closer to bengali (another magadhan prakrit descendant).

I have met both kind of people who speak bundeli and well as people who speak awadhi, but both just opt out to speaking Hindi, and I felt too embarassed to push them into speaking either. I have seen even Haryanvi refusing to speak Haryanvi outside Haryana, wonder what is causing this.

I believed kannauji is a dialect and even this whole language in its own right from what I have read about the evolution of this language tree and it's neighbours.

Yeah it happens with a lot of UP Bhojpuri speakers too idk why though. I suspect it might be due to no formal teaching of these languages in school so you wouldn't know how to interact with someone you meet from another district? Compare that to Punjabis/Bengalis who will absolutely speak their language if they can because it is (to an extent) standardised in textbooks and media
Even Maithili is taught as the 2nd language in North Bihar but there's a certain lack of mainstream media associated with the language, everything is quite old so its dying tbh. They may cease to offer it as a 2nd language altogether and only teach it as a dumbed-down 3rd language
